Overview
The mixing unit blends crushed or recycled EPS granules with virgin pre-expanded beads before the material enters the block form machine. By reintroducing production scrap into the molding process at controlled ratios, the mixing unit directly reduces raw material consumption and lowers per-block production costs.
The unit installs inline with the pneumatic transfer system that feeds the block mold, requiring no separate handling step or additional floor space for material blending.
How It Works
Recycled EPS granules (produced by a crusher or grinder from cutting trims, rejected parts, or other scrap) are fed into the mixing unit’s dosing hopper. A rotary valve meters the recycled material into the main pneumatic transfer line, where it combines with virgin pre-expanded beads flowing toward the block form machine.
The blend ratio is adjustable, typically ranging from 5% to 50% recycled content depending on the application and the required finished product properties. The rotary valve provides consistent, repeatable dosing, ensuring that every block receives a uniform mix of virgin and recycled material.
Material and Cost Benefits
In a typical EPS production facility, cutting and trimming operations generate a significant volume of scrap material. Without a recycling loop, this material becomes waste. The mixing unit closes the loop by feeding processed scrap back into block production, recovering material value that would otherwise be lost.
The achievable blend ratio depends on the end-use requirements of the finished product. Insulation boards and non-structural packaging generally tolerate higher recycled content, while applications with stricter mechanical or thermal performance specifications may require lower ratios. The mixing unit’s adjustable dosing allows each plant to find the balance between cost savings and product quality.
Integration
The mixing unit is designed to fit into the pneumatic transfer line upstream of the block form machine. It is compatible with standard EPS plant layouts and can be added to existing production lines as a retrofit or included in new plant configurations from the outset.
